Design Delay

Layers of management create a series of filters that every message must pass through before being acted upon. Structural latency increases as the company grows and adds more middle managers or complex reporting lines. This delay is not caused by individual laziness but by the number of steps required to finalize a choice.

In a technical sense, it can also refer to the lag in a database that prevents real time data from being used in the boardroom. High levels of this delay indicate a need for organizational flattening.

Communication Lag

Speed is lost when people are required to wait for meetings or approval chains to clear. Structural latency makes the company less responsive to sudden changes in the market.

Response Capability

Reducing these delays usually requires flattening the hierarchy or automating the flow of data. A firm with low structural latency can react to threats faster than its more rigid competitors.
