Meaning
Labor performed without a corresponding wage payment represents a specific allocation of human effort. Founders engage in uncompensated labor during the earliest stages of a venture or during periods of extreme financial distress. This is measured by the total hours worked multiplied by the individual’s market hourly rate.
Deferred Reward
Expectation of future gains through company growth justifies the lack of immediate pay. While the work is uncompensated labor in the present, the individual views it as an investment in the future value of their equity. The risk is that the future value remains at zero, making the labor a permanent loss of time and energy.
Sacrificing current income is a common strategy to maximize the chances of reaching a liquidity event.
Burn Reduction
Removal of founder salaries from the accounting records is the most effective way to extend the life of the cash reserve. By performing uncompensated labor, a person reduces the monthly burn rate of the company. This allows the business to survive on lower revenue or smaller investment rounds than would otherwise be possible.
Personal Sustainability
Capacity to work without pay is limited by the individual’s personal savings and basic living expenses. When personal funds run out, uncompensated labor must end or the individual faces personal insolvency. Tracking the duration of this state provides a measure of the founder’s personal runway.
